Aquiles Eco Hotel, Cape Verde/São Vicente
The Aquiles Eco Hotel, on the beach of the fishing village São Pedro, is a prototype of a sustainable construction in Cape Verde. It consists of 13 wooden containers set within a concrete skeleton. This simple and flexible structure is quickly assembled, but can also be easily disassembled if necessary. The primary building material is certified timber. The island’s raw materials sand and stone were not used, since they are protected by law and – unlike wood – are not renewable in the short-term. The furniture is also made of recycled wood. The hotel has 13 rooms the size of containers: six in both the first and second floor, and a suite with sea view on the third. These box-like rooms, with their whitewashed wood panelling, are furnished in a minimal, spartan style.
